Pierluigi Casiraghi has named the all-new Under-21 squad to face Russia with nine debutants, including Federico Macheda.
The Azzurrini are renewed every two years and begin another era with a friendly in St Petersburg on August 12.
Macheda has been a sensation at Manchester United since his move from the Lazio youth system and received a call for the Under-21 side.
He has performed for Italy at the Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 level, but the striker – who turns 18 later this month – leapfrogs straight into the Under-21 side.
In all there are nine new faces in Casiraghi’s picks, including those ‘promoted’ from the Under-20 team like Mattia Mustacchio, Matteo Gentili and Cristian Tiboni.
The squad will meet in Rome on Sunday and fly out to Russia for the match on Wednesday August 12, kick-off 14.00 UK time at the Petrovsky Stadium.
